---- About Me: I was born in St.Louis, Missouri in 1884. I was very sick throughout my childhood so I was homeschooled until I was nine. Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems was my first work of poetry that was published in 1907. My second was, Helen of Troy and Other Poems, which was published in 1911. My third volume was called, 3rd Rivers to the Sea, which was published in 1915. I married a man name Ernst Filsinger in 1914. We moved to New York City that same year. I won the Columbia University Poet Society Prize, in 1918. It became the "Pulitzter Prize" of poetry.I became unhappy with my marriage and I divorced my Ernst in 1929, against his wishes. On the morning of January 29th, 1933, I comitted suicide by taking an overdose of sleeping pills and falling asleep in the bath. Poems: "Buried Love" I shall bury my weary love,
beneath a tree,
In the forest tall and black,
Where none can see.
I shall put no flowers at his head,
Nor stone at his feet,
For the mouth I loved so much,
Was bittersweet.
I shall go no more to his grave,
For the woods are cold.
I shall gather as much of joy,
As my hand can hold.
I shall stay all day in the sun,
Where the wide winds blow,
But oh, I shall weep at night,
When none will know.
My Reaction I think this poem is saying how she lost a loved one but no one can know. She doesn't want to visit his grave or acknowledge that he died because it's too painful. But, at night she can't hold in her sadness, so she cries when no one will hear her. She also says that she will think of as much of the happy times they had together as she can so she can make it through the day. Poetic Devices

Theme
Love will last forever, because she will weep over him even after he is dead.
"Song" You bound strong sandals on my feet,
You gave me bread and wine,
And sent me under sun and stars,
For all the world was mine.
Oh take the sandals off my feet,
You know not what to do;
For all my world is in my arms,
My sun and stars are you.
My Reaction I think that this poem is saying how her love provides everything for her and sets her off into the world, but she doesn't want to leave because all she needs is him.

"What Do I Care?" What do I care, in the dreams and languor of spring,
That my songs do not show me at all?
For they are fragrance, and I am a flint and a fire,
I am an answer, they are only a call.
But what do I care, for love will be over so soon,
Let my heart have its say and my mind stand idly by,
For my mind is proud and strong enough to be silent,
It is my heart that makes my songs, not I.
My Reaction I think that this poem is saying that her heart will speak for itself.
